Here's a little Q & A on Said's now seminal and foundational text Orientalism. Orientalism is a book published in by Edward Said that has been highly influential and controversial in postcolonial studies and other fields. In the book, Said effectively redefined the term "Orientalism" to mean a constellation of false assumptions underlying Western attitudes . An essential Orientalist bias central to these contemporary readings of political Islam is the “binary opposition between Islam and the West” (Volpi, ). In this rather Manichaean worldview, the West represents modernity, secularism and democracy, while the Muslim world embodies stagnation, orthodoxy, and despotism.

The Orientalist stage, as I have been calling it, becomes a system of moral and epistemologi-cal rigor. As a discipline representing institutionalized Western knowledge of the Orient, Orientalism thus comes to exert a three-way force, on the Orient, on the Orientalist, and on the Western ‘consumer’ of Orientalism. (Orientalism 67). Immanuel Wallerstein will be featured, along with speakers Marnia Lazreg and Joseph Massad, in "Islam and the Modern Orientalist World-System," the 30th Conference of the Political Economy of the World-System (PEWS) Section of the American Sociological Association (ASA) at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN.
